Notes & thoughts
- The ratings are out of 5. My rating system for games is the same as my rating system for wrestling matches.
- I recorded and edited a video for almost every game I beat. I did not mean to do this!
- Most of the games I tried but won’t return to are from the Sega Genesis Collections bundle. I think this says more about the nature of bundled game collections than anything specifically about the Genesis. I purposefully put aside a few games in that collection to enjoy later, but that doesn’t show up in the data.
- 2021 was a year I subscribed to Xbox Game Pass for a few months, Apple Arcade, and the Nintendo Online service (I’m a sucker who upgraded to the expansion pak as well). I can’t help but think that subscriptions to game collections are only going to become more of a thing as time goes on. For the purposes of my own organization, I categorize games from these collections as if its a separate system entirely. That’s why there’s “Nintendo Switch” and “Nintendo Switch Online.”
- I played roms mainly to try out mods and hacks and cheats, because I spent a few months this year being very interested in how they work in terms of enjoying games using fresh perspectives. I still might make a video about that sometime.
- I “beat” Project-X-Zone 2 this year, but I played 99% of it back in 2016. I had just left the game at the final boss without having finished the thing. You ever just stop watching a TV show before the last episode? It’s like that. You’ll come back to it when you’re ready for it to be over, not when the creators are.
- My video game spreadsheet lives on Airtable, which is pretty perfect for things like this.
